Australia: The New Destination for Culinary Dreams

Australia: The New Destination for Culinary Dreams

Australia might be the answer if you nurture culinary dreams!
Everywhere you go, people are talking about organic foods, farmer’s markets, pop-up restaurants, healthy cooking and fusion foods. Culinary shows have taken over reality television and everyone wants to be a MasterChef! Many young adults in India are showing a keen interest in culinary science and aspire to pursue careers as restaurateurs, chefs, food scientists, food photographers and pastry chefs. Indian parents are more open to their children pursuing what was previously an unconventional career choice.

While Europe has traditionally been the capital of learning for all things culinary, Australia is gaining recognition as a place that is eclectic and offers varied experiences in the realm of food.
Traditional Spanish, Italian and local cuisines have been popular for decades, while Asian and fusion cooking is sparking interest across Australia. This coming together of cuisines and availability of rich local produce, seafood and meats provides the perfect environment for budding chefs, pastry chefs and hospitality enthusiasts. Australian cities like, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide showcase gastronomic trends that are creative and innovative. The culinary schools in these cities also harbour the same qualities and empower their students with the newest skills.
With a population of about 23 million, Australia is looking to attract a diverse mix of international students. It offers affordable and quality education options, high standards of living as well as opportunities for work after graduation – all important considerations when you are trying to decide where to study.

Culinary education
Culinary education in Australia begins after grade 12. There are a few bachelor’s degree available, however, many students consider enrolling in commercial cookery or patisserie certificate courses (certificate III followed by certificate IV). This also holds true for hospitality management. Some institutes also offer diploma programs after the certificate courses.

Course duration
The certificate III course is for a duration of one year, whereas the certificate IV course is for a duration of one-and-half years. The bachelor degree is offered for three years full time.

Cost
The cost of the three-year bachelor’s program is approximately in the range of Rs. 20-35 lakhs; certificate courses are less expensive.

Leading institutions offering culinary courses
Le Cordon Bleu in Australia is one of the most well-known culinary institutes. Others include: School of Culinary Arts at Australian College of Applied Education, William Blue College of Hospitality Management, as well as the Victorian Institute of Culinary Arts and Technology.

What makes these culinary courses attractive?
Students enrolled in Australian culinary schools graduate with internationally recognised qualifications and develop job-ready skills. Students benefit from learning with high-quality hospitality educators as well as gain real industry experience through work-based learning. Le Cordon Bleu for example has campuses in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Students develop an international network and long-term relationships that they can leverage as they carve their career path in different locations, including cities outside of Australia such as London, Paris and Tokyo.
